Reception Class

Ms. Shalom / Miss Halse

Spring Term 2012

Our overall topic this term is ‘Through the keyhole’.  We will be looking at all kinds of different homes, human and animal, and what makes a home. The inside class role play area is related to homes and the children have decided to have an ‘Under the Sea’ theme, whereby children would like to learn what and where creatures live under the sea! Through the role play area the children will learn how to engage with each other, sharing, taking turns and building on each others creative ideas. It is also an opportunity to increase their vocabulary and independent mark making skills.  The children will also be enjoying the outdoor building site role play area where we will be looking at various materials used to build a home!

Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity

To develop their personal and social skills, children will have many opportunities to play with others in groups, listen to others, take turns and learn to co-operate as part of a community.  We will be looking at the Church as God’s home on Earth and having our own Reception Christening. Children will be learning about many celebrations and festivals including a walk to the Church for the Epiphany, Mothering Sunday, St David’s day, Chinese New Year and understanding a little more about the Easter Story through role play, stories and creative activities. We will be constantly encouraging the children to be more responsible for their own belongings, putting their coats and PE kits on and off by themselves and to carry out their classroom jobs independently.  This term we will be looking at the school value ‘responsibility’ and all the children will have an area of the classroom that they will be responsible for!

Language, literacy and communication.

We will be reading together a series of traditional stories, rhymes and under the sea stories.  The children will be writing independently on a daily basis as well as writing during task time with an adult, focusing on correct letter formation. The children will be focusing on using the phonics (sounds) learnt with ‘Boris the Bat’ last term to help begin building up words in their writing and reading. We will be looking at the structure of a sentence in our reading and writing work, with the help of our Big Writing ‘Wow words’ and ‘Kung Fu Punctuation’.   We will be carrying on with our weekly group reading sessions.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We will be learning to recognise changing seasons and the features of Winter / Spring.

We will be reading stories as an introduction to the theme ‘under the sea’, whereby we will be studying what creatures live under the sea and where they live under the sea. We will also be reading stories as a starting point for exploring different materials, focusing on the properties of objects and materials found around the home. We will be looking at what is inside a home and what makes it a home. We will be finding out about different types of homes from different parts of the world. We will also be learning to use the ‘Beebot’ (a programmable floor robot) to make under sea maps and continue to practice and use the computer and various computer programmes.

Mathematical development

This term we will be continuing to say, use and look at the number bonds of the numbers 0-10 and then going on to 20 in songs, rhymes etc. We will be learning to write our numbers and to write them in the correct order. We will be beginning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting, counting forwards and backwards, relating this to addition and subtraction.  We will be looking at money and learning to recognise and sort coins, up to 20p. We will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. We will constantly be encouraging the children to take their time when counting and to check their answers.

Creative development

The children will be carrying out and making different designs of sea creatures. This will involve exploring textures and colours, making masks for role play, creating music, and developing skills by using different techniques, for example shell rubbings. The children will be performing a traditional Welsh song and learning a Welsh folk dance to perform on St. David’s Day. We will continue to learn songs and exploring instruments.  Crafts for Mother’s day and Easter time will also be completed.

Physical development

The children will continue to develop fine motor skills through cutting, threading, painting, cooking, weaving and exploring dough.  We will be developing a simple gymnastic sequence using a series of basic actions and movements. Gross motor skills development will be encouraged through painting and building on a grand scale, group games, using the parachute, the bikes and Jungle Gym.

Welsh Language Development

Children will be continuing to learn basic language patterns and simple conversation. We will continue to encourage the use of incidental Welsh throughout the day.  We will be thinking about words associated with Dewi Sant (St. David) and focusing on Ble? (where?)

Ways in which you could help your child;

·         Encourage your child to read a wide variety of books, broadening their reading experiences. This is invaluable.

·         Continue to look at the sound book with your child, helping your child to recognise and remember the sounds.

·         Continue to look at the high frequency words sent home each week, helping your child to become familiar with the words.

·         Continue to share with your child the reading book they bring home from school. Please comment in the reading record book.

·         Continue to encourage your child to ‘write’ as often as they can. Have fun!

·         If you have not done so already, please ensure a suitable PE kit is sent to school.  It will be kept in school until the half term break when it will be sent home for a ‘freshen up’!

·         Ensure all your child’s belongings are labelled clearly with their name!

If you feel you could contribute to this learning in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We would be very grateful.

Thank you for your continued support x
